Our verdict on Silent_Packer
Silent_Packer is a command-line binary packer for ELF and PE executables, written in pure C and distributed as source code and compiled binaries under the GNU AGPLv3 license. It is intended for users who need open-source packing across 32-bit and 64-bit ELF and PE formats on Linux. The packer encrypts a binary's code section and decrypts it before execution, with code obfuscation intended to make reverse engineering harder. It supports ELF64, ELF32, PE32+, and PE32 binaries, as well as PIE binaries.
Its feature depth is the main reason to consider it. Silent_Packer supports XOR ciphering and AES-128-ECB ciphering, plus section insertion packing, code-cave packing, and Silvio Text Infection for ELF files. Verbose and debug command-line modes provide additional control when working from a terminal. This combination gives the project a broader packing scope than a tool limited to one executable format or one packing method, while keeping the workflow command-line based.
Platform fit and file-format reliability are the important constraints. The documented build instructions target Linux, and no Windows version is available. The README also states that PE files have recurrent bugs, so users working primarily with Windows executables should choose a different packer if dependable PE handling is essential. Silent_Packer is better suited to Linux-oriented users who value open source, 32/64-bit ELF support, multiple packing techniques, and configurable ciphering. It is a weaker choice for Windows-native workflows or projects where PE stability is the central requirement.
