Our verdict on ShrimpSend

ShrimpSend is a file-transfer and cross-device messaging service for moving content between phones, desktops, and browsers. It is designed for people who want LAN-first transfers, with WebRTC and server-assisted relay paths available when devices cannot connect directly. Recipients can receive files in a browser without installing the application, while native clients support resumable transfers after interruptions. Applications are available for web, Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android.

The plan structure centers on device limits and hosted upload allowances. Free supports up to 3 devices, 1 GB of hosted upload per UTC calendar month, LAN direct transfer, and S3 fallback. Plus increases the limit to 10 devices and 80 GB of hosted upload per UTC calendar month. Pro supports up to 20 devices and 250 GB, while Ultra supports up to 50 devices and 800 GB. The paid plans show annual options, and the service also supports BYO S3-compatible storage for users who want to supply their own storage layer.

ShrimpSend’s strongest fit is a multi-device environment where direct local transfers, device discovery, QR login, and real-time synchronization matter. Self-hosting under AGPL-3.0-or-later adds control for teams that prefer to operate the service themselves. It is less suitable for workflows built around conventional public upload links, download tracking, or a broad file-sharing platform. Choose it for device-to-device movement across mixed platforms and networks; choose an alternative when public sharing workflows are the primary requirement.
