Our verdict on Shoelace Learning
Shoelace Learning is a game-based literacy platform for students in Grades 3–9, with educator tools for reading assessment, assignments, intervention and progress monitoring. Its adaptive engine adjusts comprehension content to learner performance, while games such as Dreamscape and Dreamseeker Drift embed reading and vocabulary questions into play. Educators can also use Reading Comprehension Level assessment, class management, test-prep packages and reports covering students, skills, reading, assignments and Class Missions. It is aimed at individual educators, schools and districts seeking structured comprehension practice with a game format.
Pricing is unusually flexible at the entry point. The Pay-What-You-Can Educator Plan is listed at $15 per educator per year and includes full access to premium features for 30 students. The regular Educator Plan is $84 per educator per year, with 30 player memberships, unlimited assignments and rewards, My Coach automated interventions, Class Missions and class management. Additional player packs cost $50 per 10 players. A 14-day free trial is also offered. Buyers should compare the included membership count with expected class size, since expanding beyond 30 players adds a separate purchase.
Shoelace runs on the web, iOS and Android, and integrates with Google and Clever. Its strongest differentiator is the combination of adaptive practice, targeted intervention and cooperative Class Missions rather than a standalone passage library. Student and class reports give educators several ways to review reading levels, skills and assignment progress, while My Coach connects identified gaps to practice. The platform is a good fit for schools wanting game-based comprehension routines and classroom visibility; educators seeking coverage beyond Grades 3–9 or a non-game-centered experience should consider a broader alternative.
