Our verdict on CommonLit
CommonLit is a nonprofit educational platform for teachers and students in grades 3–12. Its free Text Library includes thousands of literary and informational texts, while standards-aligned reading and ELA lessons support classroom instruction. Core learning tools include formative comprehension checks, Guided Reading Mode, read-aloud support, annotation and highlighting, and translation into more than 40 languages. CommonLit 360 adds a full-year English Language Arts curriculum for grades 6–12, making the platform relevant to both individual teachers and schools planning broader curriculum coverage.
The pricing structure separates individual teacher access from school-level administration. Teacher Basics costs $0 per teacher annually and includes the Text Library, CommonLit 360 Curriculum, on-demand training modules, and kickoff webinars. School Essentials PRO costs $4,000 per school per year and adds the Assessment Series, an administrator data dashboard, ClassLink and Clever integrations, and full Canvas LMS integration. School Essentials PRO Plus costs $6,850 per school per year and adds Unit Skills Assessments, professional development, and implementation support. Schools choosing a paid tier gain more assessment, reporting, and rollout support than teachers receive on the free plan.
CommonLit fits classrooms that need varied reading content, structured comprehension practice, and compatibility with common school systems. Google Classroom and Canvas assignment integrations support classroom workflows, while Clever and ClassLink connect with rostering systems on the PRO plan. The platform is web-based, with an assignment-level offline feature for temporary connectivity loss rather than a fully offline student app. Teachers and schools seeking broad reading and ELA resources should consider CommonLit; those prioritizing dedicated phonics verification or fully offline student access should look for a more specialized option.
