Our verdict on Epic
Epic is a digital reading platform for children ages 12 and under, combining ebooks, audiobooks, educational videos, decodable books, leveled readers, graphic novels, and literacy activities. Families get full library access and unlimited reading time through Epic Family, while educators can use classroom assignments, reading tracking, reports, filtering, and curated collections. Its mix of entertainment and structured literacy content makes it suitable for homes, classrooms, and schools that want one reading environment for discovery and instruction.
Pricing is split between family and school use. Epic School provides free access for educators and students on weekdays from 7am–4pm, with approximately 20,000 books and videos, book filtering, and class reports. Epic School Plus adds 24/7 year-round access, 40,000+ books and videos, downloadable books, an admin portal, class reports, and SSO/auto rostering. Family plans include Epic Family Monthly at $13.99 per month and Epic Family Annual at $84.99 per year, both with full library access and unlimited reading time. A 7-day Family trial is also available, while the annual starting price is $7.25 per month.
The platform fits schools that already use Clever, ClassLink, or Google Classroom, and it runs on web, iOS, and Android. Reading-level and grade-level filters, Read-To-Me books, decodable content aligned to literacy curricula, comprehension quizzes, badges, and progress tracking give adults several ways to guide reading. Offline reading is supported on supported mobile apps, which helps with access away from a connection. Epic is a strong choice for families and schools seeking breadth across books, audio, video, and literacy practice. It is less suited to schools needing unrestricted access on the free tier or buyers who prefer fully transparent school pricing.
