Our verdict on Shapelab

Shapelab is a VR-focused 3D sculpting and modeling application for organic models, digital props, characters, concepts, game assets, virtual worlds, digital art, and 3D printing. It is designed for beginner creators and professional 3D designers who want to move between desktop and immersive modeling workflows. The toolset covers polygon-based sculpting, voxel-based sketching and remeshing, multiresolution sculpting, dynamic topology, materials, PBR vertex painting, and model export.

Its standout strength is the range of sculpting approaches in one application. Artists can block out forms with voxel tools, refine them through subdivision levels, adjust topology manually, and paint directly on models. The combination of desktop and VR modes also gives Shapelab a broader workflow than a VR-only sculpting tool. However, automatic retopology is not included, so users who need automated topology cleanup will need another workflow or application. Windows is the listed desktop platform, while standalone access is available on Meta Quest through supported plans.
