  • Where it wins

    • Compile-time typed column helpers support safer query construction.
    • Generate entity files from an existing database.
    • Inspect generated SQL and bound values without executing queries.
  • Where it doesn't

    • The open-source drivers cover four SQL dialects, not SQL Server.
    • Its entity-based model may not suit teams seeking a standalone query builder.
    • The project is Rust-specific, limiting its fit for other language stacks.

Our verdict on SeaORM

SeaORM is an open-source relational ORM and query builder for Rust applications. It is aimed at developers who want asynchronous database access through entity-based models, including teams building services that need typed queries and common record operations. Developers can build filtered and ordered select queries, insert, update, and delete records through entity operations, and load related models through joins or batched data loading. Entity files can also be generated from an existing database, which suits projects adopting SeaORM around an established schema.

The query API combines typed column helpers with an escape hatch for raw SQL. SeaORM 2.0 documents strongly typed helpers for compile-time type checking, as well as a dedicated macro and query methods for executing raw SQL. Generated SQL and bound values can be inspected without executing a query, useful when reviewing what a query builder produces. This balance favors teams that want entity-oriented code for routine work but still need direct SQL for queries that do not fit that model. The tradeoff is that its entity-centric approach may be less suitable for developers seeking a narrowly focused, standalone query-building library.

The open-source driver features cover MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL, and SQLite, and the project supports configurable async runtimes. SQL Server support is offered separately through commercial SeaORM X rather than the open-source driver's listed backends, so teams targeting that database should assess that separate offering. SeaORM is free, self-hosted, and open source, with documentation and community support channels. It may fit small teams through enterprise-sized organizations, but the relevant choice depends on Rust and entity-based development fitting the application. Teams wanting typed asynchronous entity queries across the listed dialects have a clear case for choosing it; teams working in another language or requiring SQL Server in the open-source driver should look elsewhere or evaluate SeaORM X.
