Scout Suite is an open-source, command-line tool for auditing cloud security posture across AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, Alibaba Cloud, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, DigitalOcean, and cloud-hosted Kubernetes clusters. It is aimed at security consultants, auditors, and engineers who need to collect configuration data, identify security gaps, and review an account’s posture. The tool runs on macOS and Linux, and its multi-cloud coverage includes cloud asset inventory.

Its integration model is centered on cloud-provider APIs. Scout Suite collects configuration data from each supported environment, then produces an HTML report containing findings and account configuration. The report data can be used offline after collection, which fits point-in-time reviews, assessment work, and situations where analysis needs to continue after the collection step. Custom rulesets and exceptions files add control over how assessments are tailored to an environment.

Scout Suite’s main trade-off is its narrow assessment focus. It is distributed as an open-source project rather than a commercial SaaS product, making it a fit for teams seeking a free audit tool without paid plan decisions. However, it does not provide verified compliance frameworks, infrastructure-as-code scanning, identity analysis, or remediation. Teams that need cloud configuration snapshots, HTML reporting, and multi-cloud coverage should consider Scout Suite; teams seeking continuous posture management or those capabilities should choose an alternative designed around them.

Scout Suite pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Audits seven cloud environments through provider APIs
    • Generates HTML reports with security gaps and account configuration
    • Supports custom rulesets, exceptions files, and offline review
  • Where it doesn't
    • Provides point-in-time assessments rather than continuous monitoring
    • Does not include verified compliance frameworks or IaC scanning
    • Lacks identity analysis and built-in remediation
