Our verdict on scan4secrets

scan4secrets is an open-source command-line security scanner for developers and security teams that need to find exposed credentials across source trees, live web applications, HTTP responses, and CI logs. It is designed for self-hosted use and supports GitHub, GitLab, and Bitbucket workflows, with pre-commit scanning and CI fail gates based on finding severity. The scope extends beyond static secret detection to live crawling, DAST, credential verification against vendor APIs, and authenticated scans using cookies, headers, and proxies.

Its main strength is breadth within a security scanning workflow. Teams can enable optional vulnerability and misconfiguration scanning, define custom YAML detection rules and allowlists, and export results as SARIF, JSON, JSONL, CSV, HTML, Excel, or PDF. Integration options include GitHub Code Scanning, GitLab Security Dashboard, Sonar, Defect Dojo, Splunk, Datadog, and Microsoft Sentinel. Installation is available from source, through pipx, or as a Docker image, giving technical teams several ways to run the scanner in their own environment.

The trade-off is operational ownership: the verified platform model is self-hosted, and the command-line design places deployment and workflow management with the adopting team. scan4secrets is a strong fit for organizations that want open-source control, custom detection logic, web and DAST coverage, and flexible reporting in CI/CD. Teams looking for a managed service or a primarily visual security platform should consider whether a self-hosted command-line tool matches their operating model.
