Scality ARTESCA review
A backup-focused S3 platform with strong retention, replication, and ecosystem support.

Scality ARTESCA is an S3-compatible object storage platform aimed primarily at enterprise backup, archive, and data-protection workloads. It provides S3-compatible API endpoints, AWS CLI support, web-based management, and data browser interfaces. Deployment options include software on customer hardware, preconfigured hardware, virtual appliances, and ARTESCA+ Veeam models. This makes it a fit for organizations that want S3 storage aligned with existing infrastructure and backup operations rather than a general-purpose storage service for every workload.
Its feature set is particularly relevant to retention and recovery requirements. Object versioning preserves current and noncurrent versions, while lifecycle expiration policies can delete them according to configured rules. S3 Object Lock supports governance and compliance retention modes. Cross-region replication connects ARTESCA instances between sites, and multipart uploads support objects up to 50 TB. Integrated monitoring and storage usage reporting add operational visibility. The platform also connects with Veeam, Cohesity, Commvault, HYCU, Rubrik, Veritas, Zerto, and Acronis, giving backup teams several established integration paths.
Commercial evaluation is oriented toward direct discussions rather than a self-serve purchase. Scality offers a two-day trial and describes ARTESCA as usage-based, with demos, partners, and licensing discussions as routes to deployment. There is no free plan. Organizations choosing ARTESCA should be comfortable evaluating infrastructure, deployment, and licensing options with Scality or its partners. It is a strong candidate for enterprise teams prioritizing S3 compatibility, immutability, replication, and backup integration; teams seeking a simple self-serve object storage service or a broad developer platform should consider a different category fit.
