Our verdict on Scalar

Scalar is an API documentation and developer tooling platform for teams building and publishing APIs. It generates interactive references from OpenAPI documents, including browsable operations, configured or generated code samples, and in-browser request testing. The platform also includes hosted documentation sites, an API client, API versioning, SDK generation, and MCP servers. Its open-source components can be embedded or self-hosted, while hosted plans add publishing and collaboration features. Scalar fits open-source teams and API groups that want control over deployment without giving up hosted documentation options.

The published plans show a free tier with hosted OpenAPI docs, a built-in API client, landing pages, up to 3 APIs, 1 SDK for up to 25 endpoints, and 1 editor seat. Pro costs $150 per month, or $125 per month with annual billing, and adds custom domains and subdomains, Git Sync, Markdown and MDX, up to 15 APIs, 1 SDK for up to 100 endpoints, hosted MCP servers, and 5 editor seats. Business costs $600 per month, or $500 per month with annual billing, and adds SSO, subpath hosting, up to 25 APIs, an SDK for up to 250 endpoints, discounts on additional SDKs, and 10 editor seats. Enterprise adds full developer portals, SSO/SAML, RBAC, unlimited APIs, custom SDK size, priority support and SLAs, and a dedicated Slack or Teams channel.

Scalar’s ecosystem fit is a notable strength. It integrates with frameworks including Express, Fastify, Hono, NestJS, Next.js, FastAPI, Django, Flask, Laravel, Ruby on Rails, ASP.NET Core, Spring Boot, Actix Web, Axum, and warp. Git and CI/CD synchronization also suit teams that maintain documentation alongside API development. Choose Scalar when OpenAPI is central to your workflow and you need interactive references, generated SDKs, or deployment flexibility. Teams needing only lightweight static documentation may find its broader tooling unnecessary, while larger organizations may need Enterprise for access controls and full developer portals.
