  • Where it wins

    • Incremental compilation supports iterative Scala-to-JavaScript builds
    • Dead-code elimination and linking help shape JavaScript output
    • Interop includes JavaScript libraries, React, AngularJS, Node.js, and Vite
  • Where it doesn't

    • Requires Scala source code, so it is not a general-purpose transpiler
    • Project workflows are commonly managed through build tools such as sbt
    • Support is through community channels and documentation

Our verdict on Scala.js

Scala.js brings Scala into JavaScript application development by compiling Scala source files into JavaScript. It is aimed at teams that want to write application logic in Scala while targeting browsers, Node.js, or JavaScript modules. The toolchain generates its own .sjsir intermediate representation during compilation, and supports JavaScript exports at both top-level and method level. That makes it a focused choice for Scala developers who need to connect Scala code with JavaScript applications, rather than a general-purpose converter for unrelated source languages.

Its build and output pipeline are central strengths. Incremental compilation supports repeated development builds, while linking and dead-code elimination help produce JavaScript output with unused code removed. Optional JavaScript optimization is also available. Output can use JavaScript or ECMAScript modules, and interoperability extends to JavaScript libraries and named integrations including React, AngularJS, Node.js, and Vite. Projects are commonly managed with sbt; scala-cli, Mill, and Gradle are also supported. A standalone command-line distribution is available for teams that want CLI access.

Scala.js is open source and distributed under the Apache License 2.0. Its deployment model is self-hosted, with browser and Node.js execution support; the project does not offer vendor-hosted paid plans. Documentation and community channels are the listed support routes, so organizations that require a vendor support contract or managed service may prefer a different approach. Choose Scala.js when a team is already comfortable with Scala and wants its applications to interoperate with JavaScript libraries. It is less suitable for projects that need a language-agnostic transpiler or a hosted build and support service.
