  • Where it wins

    • Covers schemas, execution, validation, subscriptions, batching, and middleware
    • Supports complexity analysis and GraphQL Federation v1 and v2
    • Integrates with Akka HTTP, Play Framework, and multiple JSON libraries
  • Where it doesn't

    • Self-hosted deployment puts service operation in the application team’s scope
    • Federation support is provided through the separate sangria-federated package

Our verdict on Sangria

Sangria is an open-source Scala library for building GraphQL services inside self-hosted applications. It is aimed at developers who need more than basic schema definition: the toolkit covers schema DSLs, query parsing and rendering, macro-based type derivation, configurable query execution, validation, subscriptions, batching, middleware, complexity analysis, and result marshalling. Scala teams can add it to projects through SBT and expose GraphQL endpoints with integrations such as Akka HTTP or Play Framework.

Its strongest fit is breadth within the Scala GraphQL stack. Sangria supports stream-based subscriptions, batch execution of interdependent queries, and middleware for metrics, security, and profiling. Query and schema validation are included, while complexity analysis gives teams a way to assess query cost. Federation support spans GraphQL Federation v1 and v2 through sangria-federated. The integration range also covers Apollo Client, Relay, spray-json, play-json, Circe, Argonaut, json4s, MessagePack, and Amazon Ion, giving teams several options for clients and result formats.

Sangria is particularly suitable for teams that want open-source control and plan to operate GraphQL as part of a Scala application. Its self-hosted model fits organizations that manage their own deployment architecture rather than adopt a hosted SaaS product. The trade-off is specialization: the library is built for Scala, so teams working primarily in other languages should choose a different GraphQL tool. It also requires application-level deployment and operational ownership, while federation workflows involve the sangria-federated package. Choose Sangria for a Scala-native service that needs a wide GraphQL feature set; look elsewhere if you need a language-agnostic platform or hosted operation.
