  • Where it wins

    • One Rust binary runs without runtime dependencies.
    • Generates wrappers for all 14 Git hooks and sets hooksPath automatically.
    • Versionable configuration supports shared scripts, bypass, and debug modes.
  • Where it doesn't

    • Windows support relies on WSL or a native Rust installation.
    • Per-hook customization uses shell scripts and POSIX conventions.
    • Self-hosted deployment leaves setup and maintenance with your team.

Our verdict on Samoyed

Samoyed is an open-source Git hooks manager delivered as a single Rust binary with a POSIX wrapper. It is aimed at solo developers and small to mid-market teams that want repository-local hooks without a runtime dependency stack. Running `samoyed init` initializes a repository hook directory, configures Git's `core.hooksPath`, and creates wrappers for all 14 Git hook events. Developers then edit standard shell scripts for tasks such as formatting, linting, and tests.

The setup model keeps configuration close to the repository. A versionable `.samoyed` configuration and accompanying scripts can be shared with a project, while an optional user initialization script provides common setup across hooks. Automatic `core.hooksPath` configuration reduces manual Git settings, and package-manager integration is part of the product's category fit. Samoyed is free and self-hosted, with Linux, macOS, and Windows coverage; Windows use is provided through WSL or a native Rust installation. `SAMOYED=0` bypasses hooks, while `SAMOYED=2` enables debug output for troubleshooting.

Its focus is hook lifecycle management rather than a broader developer platform. Shell-script customization offers a familiar per-hook model, but teams must supply and maintain the checks those scripts run. Windows teams may need to choose between WSL and installing Rust natively, adding an environment decision that Linux and macOS users avoid. Choose Samoyed when a dependency-free binary, repository-versioned hooks, and coverage of every Git hook stage matter most. Teams seeking hosted administration or a graphical workflow should consider a different type of tool.
