Our verdict on Safari

Safari is Apple’s web browser for Mac, iPhone, and iPad users who want browsing tools closely connected to Apple’s platforms. It is free and includes Private Browsing, Intelligent Tracking Prevention, tab groups, profiles, web-page translation, Reading List, Privacy Report, passkey and password autofill with iCloud Keychain, and Handoff between nearby Apple devices. The feature set suits everyday browsing, privacy-conscious users, and people who move between Apple devices.

Its strongest advantage is ecosystem fit. Safari can synchronize passwords, bookmarks, history, tabs, and other browsing data through iCloud, while iCloud Keychain handles passkey and password autofill. Handoff supports continuity between nearby Apple devices, and Apple Pay works on supported websites. Tab Groups and shared Tab Groups help organize browsing, profiles separate browsing data and settings, and Safari extensions are distributed through the App Store. Together, these features make Safari a natural choice for users already invested in Apple services and hardware.

Safari’s focus is narrower than a browser designed for multiple operating systems. Its verified platform coverage is macOS and iOS, and Apple’s support information states that updates are delivered through operating-system updates rather than a standalone browser update channel. Safari is also not open source, and its extension model uses its own store. Choose Safari if you want a free browser with Apple-focused syncing, privacy controls, and device continuity. Choose another option if Windows access, broader platform coverage, or an open-source browser engine is important.
