Our verdict on Rythm

Rythm is an open-source template engine for Java applications, intended for developers who want to render server-side templates using Java expressions and code. Its `@` character marks template elements, and its Razor-like syntax offers a familiar structure for teams comfortable with Java. Templates can share content through includes and reusable tags, while inheritance supports layouts. Rythm fits Java teams working with Play Framework or the other listed frameworks; it is less suited to projects seeking a hosted, non-Java template service.

The feature set centers on composition and reuse. Developers can define user-defined and inline tags, include templates, and organize pages through inheritance and layouts. Tag-result caching is also available. Automatic HTML escaping is documented specifically for PlayRythm HTML templates, so that behavior should not be assumed across every configuration. Rythm is therefore a fit where Java-based expressions and server-side composition are useful, while teams needing a different template model should weigh that syntax and scope carefully.

Rythm is distributed as a Java dependency through Maven Central and is self-hosted. Repository documentation says it requires Java JDK 7 or later. The project documents integrations with Play Framework, Spring, JFinal, Ninja Framework, and MediaWiki, giving Java applications several established integration paths. It is open source and has a free plan. Choose Rythm when a Java team wants template inheritance, reusable tags, includes, and caching without a hosted service; look elsewhere if the project requires a hosted platform or automatic escaping behavior beyond the documented PlayRythm HTML case.
