  • Where it wins

    • Pusher Protocol v7 compatibility works with existing Pusher SDKs by changing the host.
    • Supports public, private, presence, encrypted-private, and cache channels.
    • Redis scaling, signed webhook retries, TLS, and per-app rate limits are built in.
  • Where it doesn't

Our verdict on RushSocket

RushSocket is an open-source WebSocket server written in Rust for teams running their own real-time infrastructure. Its Pusher Protocol v7 compatibility is intended to let existing Pusher client and server SDKs connect by changing the host, making it a fit for teams that want to retain that client ecosystem while self-hosting. It is presented as free software and distributed as a single binary for Linux or macOS deployments.

The feature set covers several channel types: public, private, presence, encrypted-private, and cache. A Pusher-compatible HTTP REST API, webhooks with HMAC-SHA256 signing and retries, and health, readiness, and statistics endpoints round out the server-side tools. TLS/SSL uses rustls, while per-app connection and event rate limits offer controls for managing traffic. The listed SDK ecosystem includes JavaScript, PHP, Python, Ruby, and Go. Presence channels are included in the feature list, though presence behavior is not established as a proven strength.

Deployment and scaling are the main trade-offs. RushSocket is self-hosted, so teams take responsibility for running it rather than choosing a vendor-hosted service; the intended platforms are Linux and macOS. Redis is available as an adapter for horizontal scaling, so teams that need that approach must incorporate Redis. Choose RushSocket when Pusher Protocol v7 compatibility, self-hosting, and a compact server feature set matter. Teams seeking a managed service, or broader verified channel-server capabilities, should consider alternatives.
