Our verdict on RomM
RomM is a self-hosted, open-source ROM manager for individuals, families, and communities organizing legally obtained game files on their own infrastructure. Its web interface supports scanning and organizing collections by platform, browsing and downloading games, metadata enrichment, and personal organization through collections, favorites, status, ratings, and notes. Companion support extends to Android devices, Linux-based handhelds, and Windows through a Playnite plugin, giving RomM a broad cross-platform role rather than limiting it to a single desktop library.
RomM’s strongest area is collection depth. It can enrich games using IGDB, ScreenScraper, MobyGames, and other providers, while also allowing manual matching, metadata editing, and refreshes. Integration coverage includes Playnite, RetroArch, EmulatorJS, Ruffle, RetroAchievements, Hasheous, LaunchBox, SteamGridDB, Flashpoint, HowLongToBeat, EmulationStation, and ES-DE. The OpenAPI-based API adds a path for integrations and companion apps. For playback, supported games can run in the browser through EmulatorJS and Ruffle, while controller-friendly navigation and gamepad controls suit console-style use.
The published offering is free and open-source, with no official paid tiers to separate features or storage. RomM also includes save and save-state storage and synchronization, which helps keep a collection organized across supported clients. The main trade-off is operational: this is a self-hosted system, so it fits people prepared to manage their own infrastructure rather than buyers seeking a hosted library service. Browser play is also narrower than general collection management because it depends on supported games and the included emulator integrations. Choose RomM for broad platform coverage, metadata control, and an extensible open-source setup; choose an alternative if you want hosted deployment or a simpler, no-administration experience.
