Our verdict on Rocky

Rocky is an open-source SQL transformation engine for data platform engineers building production pipelines. Teams define SQL models with TOML configuration, then use compile-time SQL, dependency, and type checks alongside declarative tests and fixture-driven local tests. Its feature set suits small teams through enterprise groups that want model validation and lineage in their transformation workflow. Rocky is self-hosted and available as a command-line binary, with a Python SDK, VS Code extension, and Dagster integration.

Its strongest distinction is the breadth of checks and visibility around each model. Column-level lineage and lineage diffs help teams inspect how columns relate across transformations, while schema contracts and drift checks address changes in warehouse data. Incremental and merge materialization strategies support different model execution patterns; named branches and recorded-run replay extend the workflow around model changes. Per-model cost attribution and budget checks add a cost-focused view, and AI-assisted drafting includes compile validation. Local DuckDB is also supported for running models.

Warehouse fit is the main consideration when choosing Rocky. The vendor identifies Databricks as its primary production target, while Snowflake, BigQuery, and Trino adapters are in beta and adapter capabilities vary. Integrations also include Fivetran, Airbyte, and Dagster. Rocky is a strong candidate for teams whose warehouse setup matches its supported adapters and who want SQL-first modeling with explicit checks and lineage. Teams that require a production-ready adapter for a warehouse whose Rocky adapter is still in beta should evaluate an alternative or validate that fit before adopting it.
