Our verdict on Retrospect Backup

Retrospect Backup is data-protection software for professionals and small-to-midsize businesses managing mixed environments. It covers Windows, macOS, and Linux servers, desktops, and notebooks, while its documented mobile workflow addresses iOS backups created through iTunes. File-level and system-level backup and restore support different recovery needs, and bare-metal disaster recovery extends coverage to full system recovery. The product supports local and cloud storage targets, scheduling, archive and duplicate operations, and proactive backup for intermittently connected laptops.

Its strongest fit is a long-running operation that needs more than basic file copying. Forever-incremental file-based backup, automatic file-level deduplication, Cloud Object Lock, immutable backups, and ransomware anomaly detection address storage efficiency and recovery protection. AES-256 network link encryption adds protection for data moving across the network. Remote oversight is available through the Retrospect Management Console and an iOS app, while integrations include Amazon S3, Microsoft Azure Blob Storage, Google Cloud Storage, Wasabi, Backblaze B2, MinIO, Nagios, Slack, IFTTT, and iTunes. These options suit teams with varied storage and notification requirements.

The published editions range from Solo, for one non-server Windows PC or Mac and connected hard drives, through Desktop, Single Server 5, Single Server 20, Single Server Unlimited, and Multi Server Unlimited. The server tiers progressively expand coverage from one server with five networked desktops or notebooks to unlimited servers, desktops, and notebooks. Retrospect Backup is a strong choice for organizations consolidating endpoint and server protection across several operating systems. It is less suitable for buyers seeking a free plan or native Android backup, and teams wanting a very narrow, single-device backup tool may find the edition range broader than necessary.
