  • Where it wins

    • Restore drills use scratch namespaces and check pods for validation.
    • Cross-cluster restoration supports namespace and storage-class mapping.
    • Object Lock, deduplication, and database hooks strengthen recovery workflows.
  • Where it doesn't

    • Proprietary licensing requires contacting the vendor.
    • Pricing is handled through contact sales rather than published plans.
    • Incremental deduplication depends on the optional Kopia engine.

Our verdict on Retour

Retour is a proprietary Kubernetes backup and disaster-recovery product from The Backup Company for production environments across cloud and on-premises infrastructure. It uses Kubernetes custom resources to define backups, restores, schedules, storage backends, and restore synchronization. The product automatically discovers persistent volumes from deployments and stateful workloads, while supporting cluster manifests, CSI volume snapshots, and scheduled backups with configurable retention. It is suited to teams that need more than basic volume copies, particularly operators responsible for validating recovery across clusters or data centers.

Its strongest angle is restore assurance. Retour can restore across clusters and data centers with namespace and storage-class mapping, and its restore drills place recovery copies in scratch namespaces with check pods. Application-consistency hooks cover PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, Redis, and qemu-guest freeze, helping teams coordinate backups with workload state. CSI support includes volume group snapshots where supported. These capabilities make it a good fit for organizations that need repeatable recovery procedures rather than only backup creation.

Storage and retention coverage are also broad. Retour connects with Amazon S3, Backblaze B2, Google Cloud Storage, Microsoft Azure Blob, Minio, Ceph, Cloudflare R2, DigitalOcean Spaces, Hetzner Object Storage, Wasabi, WebDAV, SFTP, Nextcloud, Dropbox, and Google Drive. S3 Object Lock provides immutable backup retention, while the optional Kopia engine adds incremental deduplicated backups. A web UI supports multi-provider OIDC and SAML authentication. The trade-off is commercial: the product is not open source, licensing requires contact with the vendor, and pricing is not presented as public plans. Teams wanting advanced validation and broad storage choices should consider Retour; those seeking an open-source product or transparent self-service pricing should look elsewhere.
