Our verdict on Restate

Restate is an open-source durable execution runtime for developers building resilient backend services, multi-step workflows, and AI agents. It journals progress and supports exactly-once execution per workflow ID, automatic retries, durable timers, signals, promises, awakeables, queues, durable RPC, keyed state, and human approval workflows. Deployment options include self-hosting, fully managed Restate Cloud, and managed BYOC in a customer cloud account. SDKs cover TypeScript, Python, Java, Kotlin, Go, Rust, and Ruby, giving engineering teams several ways to integrate it into existing services.

The plan structure is based on included actions and support coverage. Free includes 100k actions and community support. Starter includes 5M actions with community support, while Business includes 20M actions and email support during business hours. Premium includes 50M actions and a dedicated Slack channel. Enterprise provides custom actions and enterprise support. The published plans support a progression from experimentation to larger operational workloads, although teams evaluating adoption will need to compare their expected action volume and support requirements against the applicable plan.

Restate’s strongest fit is for teams that need durable control over long-running, failure-prone, or event-driven work. Kafka event consumption, OpenTelemetry, Kubernetes, AWS Lambda, Google Cloud Run, Cloudflare, Vercel, and several AI SDK integrations support a broad modern application ecosystem. Execution journals and controls to cancel, kill, restart, or pause executions add operational visibility and intervention points. The trade-off is its developer-centered model: there is no visual builder, so teams seeking drag-and-drop workflow design should look elsewhere. Choose Restate for code-defined workflows, recovery controls, and durable application logic; avoid it when a primarily visual, nontechnical orchestration experience is the priority.
