Our verdict on Redash

Redash is a browser-based, open-source data visualization and dashboard tool for teams that want to query data directly and turn results into shareable dashboards. It supports SQL and NoSQL query editing, schema browsing, autocomplete, drag-and-drop visualizations, interactive dashboards, alerts, scheduled execution, and external sharing. Organizations can use it as a hosted service or deploy it on their own infrastructure, including Docker and Linux-based environments. It is a strong fit for technical teams that prefer direct control over queries and deployment, especially when self-hosting is part of the operating model.

Its main strength is breadth at the data-source layer. Redash connects with services and systems including Amazon Athena, Amazon Redshift, Cassandra, ClickHouse, Databricks, Elasticsearch, Google Analytics, Google BigQuery, Microsoft SQL Server, MongoDB, MySQL, Oracle, PostgreSQL, Prometheus, Salesforce, Snowflake, and SQLite. The extensible data-source API expands that reach, while the REST API supports programmatic access. Teams can schedule query execution and dashboard updates, trigger alerts from data conditions, publish dashboards through links, and embed them in other experiences with iframes.

The trade-off is operational and product focus. Self-hosted use gives organizations responsibility for deployment and ongoing infrastructure decisions, making Redash better suited to teams with technical ownership than to buyers seeking a fully managed analytics experience. Its query-driven approach is valuable for SQL-centric reporting and custom data exploration, but less suitable for organizations prioritizing a broad business-intelligence suite with a wider set of packaged workflows. Choose Redash for open-source, developer-oriented analytics across varied sources; consider an alternative if minimal administration or a broader platform ecosystem matters more.
