Our verdict on Red Dead Redemption 2
Set in 1899 America, Red Dead Redemption 2 follows Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang through a story of survival, loyalty and conflict. The PC edition pairs its single-player Story Mode with Red Dead Online, making it a fit for players who want a narrative western as well as an ongoing multiplayer world. Its scope also suits people drawn to hunting, exploration and frontier activities rather than a narrowly focused action game.
The published editions are one-time purchases: Red Dead Redemption 2 costs $59.99 and includes Story Mode and Red Dead Online; the $99.99 Ultimate Edition includes those modes plus Special Edition Content and Ultimate Edition Content. The higher-priced edition is distinguished by added content, while both include the core campaign and online mode. For buyers chiefly interested in the story, the standard edition keeps the purchase straightforward; the Ultimate Edition is for those who want its additional edition content.
Red Dead Online adds a different kind of play, with the option to build a camp, ride solo or form a posse, and pursue roles such as Bounty Hunter, Trader, Collector, Moonshiner and Naturalist. Hunting, fishing, trading, treasure searches and bounties broaden the activities beyond the campaign. The PC edition also includes graphical and technical enhancements and requires Windows 10 64-bit according to the published system requirements. Choose it for a detailed western world with both story and online activities; look elsewhere if you want a free game or do not want a Windows PC title.
