Our verdict on ReadWorks

ReadWorks is a nonprofit reading-comprehension platform for teachers and students in K–12 settings. Its searchable library combines fiction and nonfiction passages with paired texts, decodable texts, Book Studies, Article-A-Day sets, vocabulary activities, and question sets. Teachers can create classes, assign materials digitally or in print, differentiate support for students and groups, and review progress. Students can work online or offline and use audio, highlighting, and annotation tools while completing reading assignments.

The published Free plan provides reading resources and tools for teachers and students at no charge. Teachers can create digital assignments and publish them to an imported Google Classroom class stream, or invite students with a class code. Clever and ClassLink integrations add additional roster or access options. Automatic grading covers multiple-choice questions, while progress reporting gives teachers a view of student work across assigned materials. The platform runs in the cloud through the web, with email as its support channel.

ReadWorks stands out through the depth of its reading collection and the range of comprehension supports around each text. Decodable materials, paired question sets, vocabulary practice, and student annotation make it suitable for structured reading practice and differentiated assignments. Its scope is intentionally narrow, however: schools seeking a broader teacher-resources suite will need another product alongside it. Choose ReadWorks for free reading content and classroom workflows; consider an alternative when non-reading subjects, native mobile apps, or support beyond email are central requirements.
