Our verdict on Raccoon

Raccoon is an open-source, self-hosted event ingestion and routing service from Raystack. It is designed for infrastructure teams moving high-volume events from websites, mobile applications, IoT front ends, and backend services into real-time data pipelines. Its event-type-agnostic API accepts WebSocket, REST, and gRPC traffic, with support for both JSON and Protocol Buffers. Raccoon also covers web, mobile, and server-side collection, making it suitable when different event producers need a common transport layer.

The strongest fit is its connection to established streaming infrastructure. Raccoon can route events to message-queue topics based on metadata and supports Apache Kafka, Google Cloud Pub/Sub, and AWS Kinesis Data Streams. That makes it useful for teams that already operate one of these systems and want ingestion separated from downstream stream processing. StatsD and Prometheus integrations add options for monitoring, while built-in latency and active-connection metrics provide operational visibility. Delivery acknowledgements and retry-oriented responses are particularly relevant when event delivery needs explicit status handling.

Deployment is centered on infrastructure ownership rather than a hosted workflow. Docker, Kubernetes, and Helm options support container-based environments, but teams remain responsible for operating the service and its surrounding message-queue systems. Raccoon is therefore a sensible choice for engineering groups that want an open-source transport component, control over deployment, and direct integration with Kafka, Pub/Sub, or Kinesis. Teams looking for built-in event analysis, a broader destination catalog, or a managed SaaS experience should choose a product with those capabilities instead.
