Our verdict on Qute

Qute is an open-source Java template engine distributed as a Quarkus extension. It is aimed at teams building Quarkus applications that need server-side templates for web pages or email, including applications that render asynchronously. The engine supports expressions, sections, includes, user-defined tags, and layout inheritance. It is a focused component for application development, rather than a hosted service or a general-purpose visual template editor.

Rendering is a notable strength: Qute offers imperative and non-blocking reactive modes, and asynchronous values can be supplied through CompletionStage and Mutiny Uni. Templates can include other templates with parameters, define tags with arguments and nested content, and use overridable insert sections for inheritance. Fragment inclusion and caching sections add further control over template composition. Quarkus can detect many template issues at build time, which makes this a fit for teams that value earlier feedback within that framework. Automatic escaping applies to HTML and XML when the corresponding template variant is set, so output handling depends on using the supported variants.

Qute is free and self-hosted as an open-source library; it can be added to a Quarkus project through the Quarkus CLI, Maven, or Gradle. Its Apache-2.0 license and Quarkus integration suit teams already working in that ecosystem, from solo developers to enterprise teams. The tradeoff is that its Quarkus focus limits its fit for projects centered on other frameworks, and the product is not a hosted rendering service. Documentation is the stated support channel, so teams seeking other support channels or a managed service should consider an alternative. Choose Qute when Quarkus integration and reactive rendering matter; look elsewhere if you need broader framework reach or hosted deployment.
