Our verdict on Quattor
Quattor is an open-source, self-hosted system administration toolkit for teams managing Linux clusters, farms, grids, clouds, and other infrastructure. It combines automated machine installation, managed clients, configuration components, the declarative Pan language, configuration databases, and reusable templates. The platform is aimed at infrastructure groups that need repeatable provisioning and centrally managed configuration rather than a lightweight desktop administration tool.
Its strongest area is controlled, staged configuration. Pan describes machine state declaratively and supports schemas and validation constraints, while Aquilon provides configuration databases through an RDBMS-backed broker and Git repositories. Teams can organize reusable templates for operating systems, hardware, services, and middleware, then compile and deploy through domains and sandboxes. Configuration profile comparison before deployment adds a review step, which suits environments where changes need to be examined before rollout.
Quattor also covers the surrounding provisioning workflow: DHCP, TFTP, PXE, and Kickstart can automate machine installation, while package installation, removal, version replacement, and repository management support ongoing administration. Integrations include YUM, Git, Subversion, Apache, Nginx, Kerberos, DHCP, TFTP, and Kickstart. The trade-off is focus: Quattor supports Linux and uses a self-hosted, agent-based model, so teams operating mixed platforms or seeking a hosted service should look elsewhere. It also has no AI features, and detailed documentation is partly legacy or version-specific. Choose Quattor when declarative validation, reusable configuration, and staged Linux deployment are central requirements; avoid it when broad operating-system coverage or a managed operating model matters more.
