Our verdict on Qt for Python

Qt for Python is The Qt Company’s official set of Python bindings for the Qt framework. It is aimed at Python teams building desktop applications for Linux, Windows and macOS, as well as Android applications. PySide6 exposes Qt 6 APIs to Python, while Shiboken6 can generate bindings that expose C++ projects to Python. The framework supports Qt Widgets and Qt Quick interfaces, making it relevant to teams that want to build with Qt components rather than adopt a web-based interface stack.

Its tooling connects the development workflow: pyside6-project supports project creation, building and deployment, Qt Designer supports widget UI design, and the Qt Python extension for Visual Studio Code provides templates, debugging and build tasks. Qt Creator is also supported. Deployment is self-hosted, with tools for desktop applications on Linux, Windows and macOS and an Android application deployment tool. These options suit teams already working in the Qt ecosystem, though they do not extend the supported targets to every platform: official documentation says iOS and WebAssembly are not supported yet.

Qt for Python is open source and freemium. The Community Edition is available under LGPLv3/GPLv3, while commercial packages require an eligible Qt commercial license. Community support and documentation are available. This makes it a fit for solo developers through enterprise teams that need Qt-based desktop or Android apps and can work within the relevant licensing terms. Teams that require iOS or WebAssembly deployment should choose a framework with those targets instead.
