Our verdict on PxeLab

PxeLab is an AGPL-3.0 open-source PXE platform for IT operations, system administrators, data-center engineers, and development teams. It combines DHCP, TFTP, HTTP, DNS, and NFS services in a single binary, with management through a web UI, REST API, or command line. The platform supports network booting across multiple client architectures, ISO uploads, OS image libraries, answer-file templates, and unattended installations. It runs in server mode on Linux, Windows, and macOS, with desktop app modes on macOS and Windows.

Its strongest distinction is the breadth of operational controls around deployment. Host inventory and Wake-on-LAN management sit alongside BMC/IPMI out-of-band power control, while version-controlled boot profiles provide rollback. Installation task tracking helps teams follow deployment work, and audit logs, access controls, and Prometheus metrics add visibility for environments where change history and administration matter. These capabilities make PxeLab a fit for repeatable bare-metal and multi-OS network deployment rather than a basic PXE boot server.

The main trade-off is operational ownership: PxeLab is self-hosted software, so teams must run and manage the deployment environment themselves. Its scope is also focused on PXE-based, network-driven OS installation, with no AI-assisted functionality. Choose PxeLab when you want an open-source platform that brings provisioning services, image management, power operations, versioning, and auditability together. Teams looking for a narrow boot utility or an AI-centered deployment workflow should consider a different type of tool.
