Our verdict on PSRule for Azure

PSRule for Azure is an open-source rule suite for checking Azure resource configuration and infrastructure as code. It is suited to teams that govern Azure environments through Bicep or Azure Resource Manager templates, from small teams to enterprise organizations. Rules cover security, reliability, and cost optimization, with more than 500 built-in checks aligned with the Azure Well-Architected Framework. The project runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, and supports both local checks and CI workflows.

Its main strength is fitting policy validation into development workflows: teams can check templates before deployment and validate changes in pull requests or CI pipelines. GitHub Actions and Azure Pipelines are listed integrations, and Azure Cloud Shell is also supported. Custom rules can be layered alongside the built-in set, while rule documentation provides examples and remediation information. This makes it relevant where teams need both a substantial starting rule set and room to encode their own Azure governance requirements.

PSRule for Azure can also analyze resources after deployment, extending its use beyond template review. That should not be treated as evidence of drift detection between declared and deployed infrastructure. The project is open source and free, with community support; teams needing support channels beyond the community or governance across infrastructure frameworks outside Bicep and ARM should assess alternatives. Choose it when Azure-specific policy checks and pull-request validation are central. It is less suitable when the primary requirement is broad, multi-cloud IaC scanning or an established drift-management workflow.
