Our verdict on Pruneapple

Pruneapple is a free, open-source disk space analyzer for macOS. It is designed for solo Mac users who want to understand how storage is distributed without giving an application permission to delete files or send telemetry. Users can scan selected folders, drives, or volumes, inspect nested usage through a concentric sunburst chart, and reveal selected items in Finder. Its read-only design makes it an analysis and discovery tool rather than a complete disk-cleanup utility.

Its strongest technical distinction is physical APFS measurement. Pruneapple accounts for sparse files, clones, and compression when calculating disk usage, helping the results reflect space consumed on APFS volumes rather than relying only on logical file sizes. The local Smart Prune analysis adds recommendations about files that may be safe to remove, while the application leaves the final decision and deletion action to the user. CSV export provides a practical way to retain or further examine directory data and details. Offline operation without telemetry or network calls also suits users who want storage analysis to remain on-device.

The trade-off is a narrow platform and workflow scope. Pruneapple runs on macOS and focuses on visual analysis, Finder discovery, export, and local recommendations; it does not directly delete files, and it does not include a treemap view. Support is centered on documentation, and its integration breadth is limited. Choose Pruneapple if accurate APFS accounting, open-source availability, privacy, and read-only behavior matter more than automated cleanup or cross-platform access. Users who need Windows support, built-in deletion, broader integrations, or treemap visualization should choose a different analyzer.
