Our verdict on Primus
Primus is an open-source Node.js library for developers building real-time client-server applications. It provides a shared API across transports and frameworks, so teams can change the underlying communication layer without rewriting application communication code. Primus is a library to incorporate into an application, rather than a hosted service, and is suited to teams that want control over how they deploy and configure real-time communication.
The transport choice is a central part of its appeal: listed options include WebSockets, BrowserChannel, Engine.IO, Faye, SockJS, and uws. Primus attaches to an HTTP-compatible server and generates a client-side library. It also includes randomized exponential-backoff reconnection, online/offline detection, configurable message parsers and encoders, and authorization hooks for connection requests. Broadcasting to connected clients and a plugin interface provide additional building blocks for server and client behavior. This breadth makes Primus relevant when a team values a common interface across multiple transport choices; teams seeking a narrowly focused, ready-to-run hosted endpoint should look elsewhere.
Primus is open source and has a free plan, with self-hosted deployment. There are no paid tiers described; teams should expect to manage the library within their own application rather than choose a connection plan. JavaScript/Node.js client support is listed, along with Objective-C and Android Java SDKs maintained by the community. Support channels are community and documentation. Those traits fit developers comfortable integrating and operating a library, including teams that may later change transports. It is a less natural fit for buyers who need a vendor-hosted service, formal support channels, or a managed setup instead of application-level implementation.
