Our verdict on PowerDNS Authoritative Server

PowerDNS Authoritative Server is open-source software for hosting domain names and answering queries for configured zones. It is aimed at developers and teams building authoritative DNS platforms, particularly scalable hosting deployments that need programmable control over zones and records. The server runs in Linux and Unix environments and provides authoritative query serving, primary and secondary operation, IXFR, autoprimary, and support for geographical load balancing and traffic distribution.

Its strongest fit is with infrastructure teams that want to choose their storage layer. PowerDNS supports MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQLite3, LDAP, LMDB, BIND zone files, and other backend patterns described by the product, including database, zone-file, co-process, and JSON API backends. The built-in JSON/REST API covers zone, record, and DNSSEC management, while DNSSEC signing and key management address signed-domain workflows. Scripting supports dynamic DNS responses and redirection, and real-time statistics with automated reporting add operational visibility.

The trade-off is that PowerDNS Authoritative Server is more server-centric than management-centric. Role-based access is available through the ZoneControl management interface, but ZoneControl is a separate related offering rather than the core server experience. Commercial support is also separate from the open-source server. Choose PowerDNS when your priority is a configurable authoritative DNS engine with API access, multiple storage options, DNSSEC, and traffic steering. Look elsewhere if you need a primarily visual management product or a broader platform footprint beyond Linux and Unix environments.
