Our verdict on Porter

Porter provisions and manages Kubernetes infrastructure in a customer’s AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure account. It is aimed at startups, growing engineering teams, and organizations operating applications at scale that want managed Kubernetes delivery without moving workloads out of their own cloud accounts. Teams can deploy applications from Git or Docker, automate builds and CI/CD when repositories change, and create preview environments for pull requests. The platform is available through web, Windows, macOS, and Linux interfaces.

Pricing is metered monthly by requested application resources. The Standard plan starts at $6 per GB RAM per month and includes GitHub deployment, unlimited applications, preview environments, autoscaling, jobs, and cron jobs. A second Standard price is listed at $13 per vCPU per month, adding certificate management, monitoring, logging, custom autoscaling, and alerting. The Enterprise plan adds volume discounts, premium support, advanced RBAC, SAML-based SSO, custom alerts, and on-premises installation. Underlying AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud costs are separate, so total spend depends on both application resources and cloud infrastructure.

Porter’s strongest fit is teams that value control over their cloud account while wanting a dashboard or CLI for Kubernetes operations. Its feature set covers custom Helm chart deployment, health checks and graceful shutdown for zero-downtime configuration, custom metrics scaling, jobs, cron workloads, monitoring, logging, and API audit logs filterable by user, time, action, and resource. AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, GitHub, Docker, Helm, and Prometheus integrations support a hybrid delivery model. Teams needing advanced access controls, SSO, premium support, or on-premises installation should consider Enterprise; teams seeking a free entry point or broader rollout coverage should choose an alternative.
