Our verdict on Portainer
Portainer is a self-hosted web platform for managing Kubernetes, Docker, and Docker Swarm environments. It is aimed at teams that need a centralized web UI for multiple clusters, whether those environments run on EKS, AKS, GKE, bare metal, on premises, or at the edge. The platform combines cluster visibility with workload, volume, networking, resource, and GitOps operations. Its open-source Community Edition and free plan make it suitable for evaluating the management model before adopting paid capabilities.
Pricing is organized around annual, node-based plans. Starter costs USD 1,045 per year for 5, 10, or 15 nodes, with community support and up to 16 vCPUs per node. Scale costs USD 2,095 per year for 5 to 25 nodes and adds 9x5 next-business-day support, vendor onboarding, and support for up to 24 vCPUs per node. Enterprise uses custom pricing and includes priority support, 32 to unlimited vCPUs per node, and a managed platform services option. A 45-day period is available as an extended Enterprise trial; it is separate from the free plan.
Portainer’s strongest distinction is the breadth of its governance layer. Teams can apply role-based access control, directory integration, fleet governance, policy drift remediation, Pod Security Standards, OPA Gatekeeper policies, resource quotas, audit logs, and SIEM integration from a centralized interface. Git repositories support deployment workflows, while existing Kubernetes environments can be imported through kubeconfig. Portainer fits organizations seeking governed, multi-cluster administration with a web, API, or self-hosted operating model. It is less suited to teams that need paid support at the entry tier or provisioning beyond the Talos and Omni integrations.
