Our verdict on Port Authority
Port Authority is a free, open-source Android application for discovering hosts, checking TCP ports, and gathering network information. It is aimed at people who need LAN or WAN scanning from an Android phone or tablet rather than from a desktop security toolkit. Its feature set combines LAN host discovery, public IP discovery, custom port range scans, MAC address vendor detection, DNS record lookups, and Wake-on-LAN for LAN hosts.
Scanning covers both local networks and internet-facing targets, with TCP checks across LAN and WAN connections. Port Authority also provides lightweight SSH and HTTP(S) service fingerprinting, then lets users open discovered HTTP(S) services in a browser. That combination makes it useful for identifying reachable services and adding basic context to discovered hosts without requiring separate network utilities. Wake-on-LAN adds a practical device-management function for compatible LAN hosts.
The main trade-off is focus. Port Authority is available only on Android phones and tablets, so it is not a fit for teams that need a desktop or broader multi-platform workflow. The free pricing model keeps access straightforward, while a separate donate version is available through Google Play. The latest documented release is version 2.4.5, released in September 2022, and the Google Play listing shows an update date of September 11, 2022. Choose Port Authority for a mobile-first, open-source scanner with useful discovery and network utilities; choose another tool if you need a current desktop-centered platform or a broader operational workflow.
