Our verdict on PNETLab

PNETLab is a virtual-machine-based network lab platform for learners, instructors, and network professionals who need repeatable environments for networking, systems, and related technologies. PNETLab Box runs on a local computer or server, while the PNETLab Store provides downloadable community labs. Browser and native consoles, startup-configuration import and export, multi-user sessions, permissions, and resource controls support both individual practice and shared instruction.

The Free plan includes an offline version, PNETLab Store access, unlimited nodes per lab, Docker integration, and Wireshark capture. The published plan structure is straightforward: PNETLab documents free access with no paid plans. Platform options include web, Windows, macOS, Linux, and self-hosted deployment, with server deployment as the stated category model. Integrations with Docker, Wireshark, VMware Workstation, VMware ESXi, and Google Cloud Platform give it a practical fit across local and hosted lab environments.

Its breadth is a central strength. PNETLab supports QEMU, Dynamips, IOL, virtual network-device images, Docker stations, HTML consoles, native consoles, packet capture, lab workbooks, and CPU, RAM, and HDD limits. That makes it suitable for structured learning and mixed technology labs rather than a narrow single-device simulator. The trade-off is operational: PNETLab Box runs as a virtual machine, and usable node capacity varies with device type and hardware even though the Free plan states unlimited nodes per lab. Choose PNETLab for broad, free, browser-accessible emulation and shared labs; choose an alternative if automation through an API is a core requirement.
