Our verdict on Plik

Plik is an open-source, self-hosted temporary file upload and sharing system for people and organizations that want to manage their own file-transfer service. Users can upload, manage, and download files through a web interface or use the cross-platform command-line client to upload and share links. Its range of transfer controls suits workflows where links should expire, downloads should be limited to one, or files should move directly between sender and recipient. It is a better fit for self-hosters than for buyers seeking a managed service with a vendor-priced plan.

Transfer controls are a notable strength. Administrators can configure time-to-live and automatic cleanup, enable one-shot downloads that delete files after the first download, and protect uploads with passwords. In stream mode, files go directly from uploader to downloader without server storage. Plik also supports end-to-end encryption using age, along with file previews and archive creation. Those options give it flexibility across different sharing needs, though the appropriate file-size and expiry limits depend on server configuration rather than a fixed published plan.

Deployment and storage choices make Plik adaptable to existing infrastructure: file storage can use local storage, S3, OpenStack Swift, or Google Cloud Storage, while metadata can use SQLite, PostgreSQL, or MySQL. Google OAuth, GitHub OAuth, and OpenID Connect are also supported. The trade-off is that Plik is distributed as self-hosted software rather than as a vendor-priced hosted service, so buyers should be comfortable managing their own deployment and configuration. Support is through documentation and community. Choose Plik if you want open-source control over encrypted, configurable transfers; consider an alternative if you need a managed service or a desktop app.
