Our verdict on Planning Poker
Planning Poker is a web-based estimation tool for agile and Scrum development teams. Organizers create sessions, add user stories or tasks, invite participants, collect anonymous effort estimates, compare scores, and record agreed estimates. Players can participate without creating accounts, making it suited to teams that want structured planning sessions without adding every participant to a separate account system. Predefined pointing scales, a customizable game timer, automatic score averaging and rounding, and editable averages support common estimation workflows.
The freemium structure gives teams a way to start with Free Basic, which supports up to 5 players in a game, four pointing scales, a customizable timer, editable score averages, and a printable results page. The published plans also show a 14-day Pro trial, with no credit card required for new accounts. Standard adds Jira integration, custom pointing scales, CSV or XML import, story details and acceptance criteria, team velocity monitoring, and CSV export. Pro supports up to 50 participants and includes the same core collaboration and agile workflow features, while Enterprise adds annual invoicing, custom terms, bulk discounts, and access to Standard and Pro plans. Billing is available monthly or annually, and pricing is per game organizer rather than per seat.
Its strongest fit is for agile teams that want estimation to connect with ongoing delivery work. Jira synchronization, along with integrations for TFS, Rally, and VersionOne, helps place planning alongside existing agile software. Story details, acceptance criteria, velocity monitoring, and import/export options extend the tool beyond a one-off voting room. The trade-off is a narrow platform footprint: Planning Poker is web-only, and Free Basic is both ad-supported and limited to 5 players. Choose it for mature estimation workflows, anonymous participation, and Jira-centered planning; choose an alternative when native desktop or mobile coverage, larger free sessions, or an ad-free entry tier is more important.
