Our verdict on Piku

Piku is a self-hosted micro-PaaS for deploying applications to servers through a Heroku-style Git SSH push workflow. It is aimed at hobbyists, schools, and small deployments that want a compact way to run Python applications without adopting a vendor-operated hosting service. Python applications use isolated virtual environments, while supported runtimes can be detected, dependencies installed, and processes run through uWSGI with nginx handling web traffic.

Its main appeal is the amount of deployment functionality in a narrow package. Piku includes background worker processes, cron-scheduled jobs, virtual hosts, DNS aliases, automatic or private SSL certificates, static file serving and caching, ENV-file configuration, and worker scaling with process management. The Git-based deployment method gives teams a direct path from application repository to server, while managed Python runtimes and virtual-environment isolation keep application execution organized. For small projects that value control and a simple deployment model, this feature set covers more than basic file transfer while remaining focused on application hosting.

The trade-off is operational ownership. Because Piku is self-hosted and open source, the deployment model depends on managing the underlying servers and the surrounding platform environment rather than selecting a hosted plan. Its platform coverage and integrations are limited, so teams seeking a broad ecosystem or a managed hosting experience should consider an alternative. Piku fits best when Linux or Windows server support, Git deployment, worker processes, scheduled jobs, and lightweight process management are the priorities. It is less suitable for organizations that need extensive integrations, broad platform options, or vendor-operated infrastructure.
