Our verdict on Photino
Photino is an open-source framework for building native desktop applications with web-based interfaces. It suits developers who want to use HTML, CSS, and JavaScript alongside .NET, including C# teams wrapping an existing or new web UI in a desktop window. The framework targets Windows, macOS, and Linux, and its published IDE options include Visual Studio, VS Code, and the dotnet CLI. It is a desktop choice rather than a cross-platform mobile framework.
A defining tradeoff is its use of each operating system’s built-in browser control to display the UI. That avoids bundling a browser engine with the application, while keeping the interface based on web technologies. Photino offers a Blazor extension and starter templates for Angular, React, and Vue; it also supports multiple child windows and provides a sample for gRPC calls between the UI and application. Its .NET implementation can communicate with operating-system features. These options make it relevant when a team wants a web UI in a desktop shell, but it is not aimed at teams seeking mobile deployment from the same framework.
Photino is free and open source, so there are no paid tiers to compare. The project provides documentation and community support, with email also listed as a support channel. The vendor says it is concentrating on .NET, while noting that other languages may use Photino.Native; teams choosing a non-.NET path should account for that emphasis. Pick Photino if desktop delivery, web UI technologies, and a .NET-friendly workflow fit the project. Choose another framework if mobile apps are required or if a bundled browser engine is a priority.
