Our verdict on PGDSAT

PGDSAT is a command-line security assessment tool for PostgreSQL clusters. It is designed for administrators and organizations that need automated checks across installation, permissions, logging, authentication, configuration, replication, backups, and related security settings. Its open-source model and Linux deployment make it a focused option for PostgreSQL security teams managing self-hosted or on-premises environments.

The scanner covers around 90 PostgreSQL security controls, including checks from the CIS PostgreSQL benchmark. Its scope spans user access, authorization, authentication, connections, directory and file permissions, logging, auditing, installation, patching, PostgreSQL settings, replication, backup, and configuration. It also supports privilege analysis and compliance templates. Automated cluster assessment gives teams a repeatable way to review several security areas, while text and HTML report output can fit both command-line workflows and more shareable review processes.

Deployment is narrow by design. PGDSAT runs as a standalone Perl-based program on Linux and must be run on the PostgreSQL server with access to PostgreSQL binaries and cluster configuration. That makes it a practical fit for teams comfortable with command-line administration and on-premises infrastructure, but less suitable for teams seeking a hosted scanner, broad database coverage, or a graphical workflow. The tool is free and open source, with no paid-tier distinction to evaluate. Choose PGDSAT when PostgreSQL depth, CIS checks, and local assessment matter most; choose an alternative when you need support for other database platforms or verified remediation guidance.
