  • Where it wins

    • Open-source CDC with full loads and continuous synchronization
    • Parallel loading, partition support, and schema-change propagation
    • Connects with warehouses, streams, and object storage destinations
  • Where it doesn't

    • Core replication direction is one-way

Our verdict on PeerDB

PeerDB is a database replication and data-movement product built around PostgreSQL. It performs full initial table loads, then uses PostgreSQL WAL and replication slots for continuous change data capture. Destinations include ClickHouse, ClickHouse Cloud, Snowflake, BigQuery, Elasticsearch, Kafka, Redpanda, Google Pub/Sub, Azure Event Hubs, S3, and GCS. The product suits data teams moving PostgreSQL data into analytics systems, streams, or storage while retaining the option to run the open-source edition with Docker.

The open-source edition covers CDC, parallel initial loads, streaming query replication, a SQL query layer, schema-change handling for supported destinations, partitioned-table replication, and Lua-based record and row transformations. Parallel loading uses transaction snapshots and CTID scans, while slot-growth and connection alerts help identify operational conditions. Its PostgreSQL-compatible SQL layer adds a way to query replicated data, making the product more than a basic transfer utility. The main architectural constraint is direction: the listed category specification describes one-way replication, so teams needing bidirectional synchronization should consider a different approach.

Managed plans add capacity and operational services in clear tiers. Micro costs $250 per month for up to 2 vcores and includes high availability, in-place upgrades, autoscaling, advanced logs, metrics, monitoring dashboards, and burstable instance types. Small costs $1,000 per month for up to 4 vcores and adds white-glove implementation support plus 24x7 production support with SLAs. Medium is $2,000 per month for up to 8 vcores, while Large is $4,000 per month for up to 16 vcores; both include those support features. Choose PeerDB for PostgreSQL-centered, one-way replication with open-source flexibility or managed operations. Look elsewhere if replication must run in multiple directions.
