Where it wins
- Parallel POSIX access with striping across storage nodes
- NFS, SMB/CIFS, S3, and DirectFlow access paths
- Erasure coding, replication, encryption, snapshots, and quotas
Where it doesn't
- Contact-sales pricing adds a procurement step
- The director-and-storage-node architecture requires planning
- Broad protocol coverage may add environment and access decisions
Our verdict on PanFS
PanFS is VDURA’s distributed parallel file system for AI, high-performance computing, research, and other data-intensive workloads. It combines director nodes, storage nodes, and a Linux DirectFlow client within one global namespace. Files can be striped across multiple storage nodes, while network erasure coding and small-file replication provide protection options. The platform is designed for on-premises, cloud, and hybrid deployments, with access through DirectFlow, NFSv3, SMB/CIFS v3.1, and an S3 gateway.
Protocol breadth and ecosystem fit are central strengths. PanFS supports AWS, Azure, Google Cloud Platform, and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, alongside REST API and Kubernetes CSI interfaces. That combination suits organizations connecting large compute clusters, cloud environments, containerized workloads, and conventional file or object access. Centralized management, snapshots, quotas, and a single namespace help organize distributed storage, while dynamic data acceleration across flash and HDD tiers addresses environments with different performance requirements. Teams should expect architecture planning around director nodes, storage nodes, client access, and protocol selection.
Pricing is contact-sales and subscription-based, with licensing priced by storage consumption per 10TB. The published product details emphasize enterprise deployment rather than a self-service purchasing path. Security features include AES-256 encryption at rest and in flight with KMIP key management, and the platform supports replication for deployment requirements that call for another protection method alongside erasure coding. PanFS is a strong fit for organizations that need parallel POSIX performance, multiple access protocols, and hybrid infrastructure support. It is less suited to smaller teams seeking a narrowly focused file share or transparent, fixed-price purchasing.
