Our verdict on Paessler PRTG Network Monitor
Paessler PRTG Network Monitor is proprietary, self-hosted infrastructure monitoring software for small, medium-sized, and larger IT environments. It is designed for teams monitoring network devices, servers, applications, virtual environments, websites, cloud services, bandwidth, and network traffic from Windows servers. Companion interfaces and mobile apps support monitoring and administration on iOS and Android, while an HTTP API supports integration and custom device templates. Its coverage also fits IT, OT, and IoT environments that need centralized visibility across varied infrastructure.
PRTG’s strongest differentiator is its sensor model and breadth. The product includes more than 250 preconfigured sensor types, with monitoring through SNMP, PING, NetFlow, sFlow, jFlow, and IPFIX. Automatic discovery and sensor setup can speed initial coverage, while real-time maps, drag-and-drop dashboards, distributed monitoring, and remote probes support larger or distributed environments. Teams can create custom sensors with scripts, REST, SSH, and HTTP push data. Alerting includes configurable thresholds, dependencies, escalation, and scheduling, with email, push, SMS, HTTP request, Syslog, SNMP trap, script, and SNS notifications.
The pricing structure is based on sensor capacity and annual billing. The Freeware Edition supports up to 100 sensors at no charge with no stated time limit. Paid plans begin with PRTG 500 at $200 per month for up to 500 sensors, followed by PRTG 1000 at $358, PRTG 2500 at $742, PRTG 5000 at $1,300, and PRTG 10000 at $1,642 per month. A 30-day trial is also available. PRTG suits teams that value broad, self-hosted monitoring and detailed alerting; organizations seeking a hosted deployment or simpler device-based pricing should consider alternatives.
