Our verdict on Oxidized

Oxidized is an open-source network device configuration backup tool and RANCID replacement for teams that need scheduled collection and versioned storage on premises. It connects to network devices, collects their configurations at configurable intervals, and stores them through file, Git, Git-Crypt, or HTTP output backends. Its free plan and Linux, web, and API platforms make it a practical fit for lean infrastructure teams that want configuration backup without a paid software tier.

Git is the standout feature for change tracking. A Git commit is created when a configuration changes, providing version history and diffs for review. Secret removal filters can be applied before configurations are stored, while triggered backups are available through the REST API. The optional oxidized-web extension adds a web interface and REST API, so teams can choose between scheduled collection and API-driven workflows. Inventory sources include CSV, SQLite, MySQL, and HTTP, supporting different approaches to device discovery and organization.

Oxidized also fits environments that already use Git, Git-Crypt, HTTP, Slack, AWS SNS, Cisco Spark, or XMPP. Support for more than 130 operating system types broadens its device coverage, although the product remains focused on collecting and storing configurations rather than presenting a broad network management suite. Teams seeking a free, open-source backup utility with Git history, configurable scheduling, and flexible inventory backends should consider Oxidized. Organizations prioritizing documented rollback or compliance workflows should look for a product whose scope is centered more directly on those requirements.
