Our verdict on Overture

Overture is desktop music notation software for composers, arrangers, music educators and students working on orchestral, band, choral, lead-sheet or tablature scores. Available for Windows and macOS, it brings notation, MIDI recording and data editing into a single-window score interface. Linear View links notation and MIDI editing, while a studio audio/MIDI mixer and plug-in support extend the workflow beyond writing notes. This is aimed at people who want score production and MIDI work in one desktop application, rather than browser-based collaboration.

The strongest case for Overture is the range of notation and MIDI tasks it combines. It imports and exports MusicXML and MIDI files, extracts multiple instrumental parts simultaneously, and offers automatic and customizable guitar tablature. VST, VST3 and AU support provides an audio plug-in route, alongside playback and mixer controls. These features make it relevant to arrangers who move between a full score, individual parts and MIDI editing. The published feature set does not include collaboration, so teams needing shared, collaborative score work should consider another tool.

According to the vendor's pricing page, the Retail Download Version is $249 one-time. The Crossgrade is $129 one-time for users of Finale, Sibelius, Notion or Encore, while the Academic Version is $149 one-time for qualifying schools, educators, students, church administrators and private music teachers. Site licenses are listed at $100 per seat for 5–29 seats and $80 per seat for 30+ seats. A 30-day demo is available, but after the trial period it loses save and print functionality; there is no permanent free plan. Overture fits buyers comfortable with desktop software and an upfront license cost, especially those who can use an eligible crossgrade or academic price. Those seeking free ongoing access or built-in collaboration should look elsewhere.
