Our verdict on Orchestra

Orchestra, also called Mainframe-Orchestra, is an open-source Python framework for developers building LLM task pipelines and multi-agent applications. It lets teams define tasks with context and instructions, configure reusable agents with roles, goals, models, and tools, and connect tasks into larger workflows. Its fit is clearest for Python agent teams that need task decomposition and tool use, rather than teams seeking a general-purpose framework across programming languages.

The framework’s central strength is coordinating work across agents. It can decompose tasks dynamically, select tools, and run iterative tool-use loops; outputs and context can also flow between dependent tasks. For retrieval-oriented applications, its documented capabilities include text splitting, embeddings, and tools for FAISS and Pinecone. Asynchronous response streaming is available as well. This breadth supports agent workflows that combine reasoning, tools, and retrieval, though projects with needs beyond these documented capabilities may prefer a framework with a broader feature set.

Orchestra provides a unified interface to providers including OpenAI, Anthropic, OpenRouter, Ollama, Groq, TogetherAI, Gemini, and DeepSeek, and can connect MCP-compatible servers and LangChain tools. It is self-hosted and available for Linux, macOS, and Windows. The project is Apache-2.0 licensed and has a free open-source offering; support is community-based. That combination can suit solo developers and small teams comfortable managing their own deployment and relying on community support. Teams that require commercial support or a JavaScript SDK should consider alternatives.
