Our verdict on Orchard

Orchard is a self-hosted cloud development environment for teams that want control over development infrastructure. It provisions devcontainer-based workspaces from Git repositories inside isolated QEMU virtual machines. A web dashboard manages workspaces and teams, while the Trowel command-line interface provides another management path. Persistent workspaces can be suspended and resumed, making Orchard a fit for self-hosters and teams standardizing development environments on infrastructure they control.

Its platform fit is centered on GitHub, Docker, Docker Compose, PostgreSQL, QEMU, AWS EC2, and VS Code Remote SSH. Local VM provisioning uses QEMU, while AWS EC2 provides a cloud infrastructure option. Developers can connect through VS Code Remote SSH, and the product also includes AI coding assistant integrations. PostgreSQL stores persistent platform state. This combination suits teams with an existing GitHub and container workflow, but the published integration and IDE coverage is narrower than products built around a wider ecosystem.

Orchard’s strongest distinction is its combination of devcontainers, VM isolation, workspace persistence, suspension, and self-hosting in one open-source project. It does not include workspace prebuilds or image caching, so teams prioritizing fast preconfigured workspace startup may prefer a product with those capabilities. Orchard is the better fit when infrastructure control, isolated QEMU environments, and customer-managed deployment matter more than broad IDE coverage or a larger set of workspace acceleration features. It is less suitable for teams seeking a hosted service with minimal infrastructure responsibility or a wider range of built-in development environment options.
